Am I a healthy weight? People come in all shapes, sizes and builds. It's part of our beauty. And we don't want you to get hung up about what you weigh and how you look; cos what's inside you is so much more important and valuable. But we also know there's so much pressure out there to conform, and as this section is about eating disorders, we though it would be helpful to give you some links to a couple of guidelines that will tell you whether you're in the right area or not. First, BMI. This stands for your Body Mass index and is a term used by Doctors and other medical people to determine whether your weight is roughly in line. It uses a mathematical formula and takes into account your weight and your height. See the links below for useful sites that will help you calculate your BMI and understand more about it. www.consumer.gov/weightloss/bmi.htm www.caloriecounting.co.uk/resources/charts/ideal.htm (Note: Girlabout has no links with these sites and we do not necessarily endorse or support all the information to be found on them). If you've found that you're over or underweight; don't panic. A healthy balanced diet and plenty of exercise will almost always cure the problem without you needing to starve yourself or make yourself ill. Chat to an older friend, teacher or your GP or look out for our series on healthy eating and fitness coming soon! |
