Poppers

The Names:

The Facts:

Poppers is the name for the group of chemicals known as Alkyl Nitrates. They were originally prescribed as heart medication, but are rarely used for that purpose today. It usually comes as clear or straw-coloured liquid in a small bottle or tube, and is inhaled through the mouth or nose.

The Law:

Alkyl Nitrites can only be issued by pharmacies under the Medicine Act. Possession is legal, but supply can be an offence.


The Effects

The effects of poppers are instant and intense, often known as a 'rush'. You may feel light-headed, giddy, hot and your senses may be heightened. These effects are caused by a sudden surge of blood to the heart and brain. It may like time speeds up or slows down. The effects generally last up to 5. Users are often left with a headache.

The Risks

Side effects include headaches, nausea, coughing, dizziness, fainting, loss of blood pressure and skin problems. If spilled, poppers can burn the skin, and can be fatal if swallowed.
