Drugs & Alcohol

Everyone, and we mean EVERYONE, has something to say about drugs. Even so, there's still a lot of myths around, and fiction often gets in the way of the facts. So this section of the site aims to tell you a bit about the different kinds of drugs, the effects they can have on a person's mind, body and even the way they live their life. There are serious risks linked to drug taking so it's vital to get your hands on accurate, non-biased information.

Firstly, different drugs have different effects. People take certain drugs to make them feel confident and excited. They may use other drugs to relax them or affect the way they see things. It's impossible to accurately predict the effects of any drug on an individual as much depends on the amount taken, the user's mood and their surroundings. However, most drugs can be divided into broad groups:

  • Stimulants: drugs which act on the central nervous system and increase brain activity (including cocaine, crack, ecstasy, poppers, speed, tobacco)
  • Depressants: drugs which act on the central nervous system and slow down brain activity. (including alcohol, gases, glues, aerosols, GHB, tranquillisers)
  • Hallucinogens: drugs which act on the mind, distorting the way users, see and hear things. (including cannabis, ketamine, LSD, magic mushrooms)
  • Analgesics:drugs that have a painkilling effect. (including heroin)
  • Anabolic steroids: these drugs promote the growth of skeletal muscle and increase lean body mass.
