Ecstasy

The Names:

E, pills, doves, XTC, Bruce Lee's , disco biscuits, Jack Dee, Jack & Jills, echoes, hug drug, knobbly knees, burgers, fantasy

The Facts:

Ecstasy is in fact a mixture of drugs, including a drug called MDMA. It is usually white, but comes in tablets of different shapes and sizes. Different ecstasy tablets contain different amounts of MDMA, which affects the strength of the effects.

The Law:

Ecstasy is a Class A drug. It is illegal to make, supply, or possess it. Supplying ecstasy can result in life imprisonment and a fine.

The Effects:

Sound, colour and emotions can seem much more intense. It is popular with clubbers as users feel an energy buzz that means they can dance for hours, and feel very close and connected to those around them. Effects usually last 3-6 hours. At the outset, users may experience nervousness, tightening of the jaw, increased heart rate, sweating, and nausea. This is sometimes known as 'coming up'.

The Risks:

Some users experience paranoia and confusion, tiredness and depression on or after taking Ecstasy. It affects the body's thermostat, especially when dancing for long periods in a hot place such as a club, and increases the risk of overheating and/or dehydrating. It may leave women susceptible to cystitis and thrush, and many men experience difficulties in attaining an erection or orgasm while on ecstasy. Research is being done into the long-term effects of ecstasy, including possible links to brain damage.
